Zhang Shipeng, born in Beijing in 1942, is a second- generation disciple of Qi Baishi, studying under Xu Linlu and Qian Shoutie. He is renowned for his mastery of the "Three Perfections"—calligraphy, painting and seal carving, and excels particularly in ink wash paintings of shrimps and crabs, earning him the title of the "God of Shrimp Painting". His works integrate tradition with innovation, featuring the following distinctive traits: Artistic Style • Ink Wash Shrimps and Crabs: Rendered in diverse postures and vivid lifelikeness, they inherit the artistic spirit of Qi Baishi's "between likeness and unlikeness" and incorporate his own free and natural brushwork. • Integration of Seal Carving with Calligraphy and Painting: Learning seal carving from Qian Shoutie, he fuses elements such as oracle bone inscriptions and bronze inscriptions to form a unique art of the "Three Perfections". • Color and Ink Rhyme: Retaining the lively appeal of Qi Baishi's "red flowers and ink leaves", his works also absorb the traditional techniques of Wu Changshuo and Lin Liang, boasting elegant and varied ink tones. Representative Achievements • Spring Greeting Painting: Touring and exhibited in 15 countries from 2000 to 2003, it won the Gold Medal at the World Art Ceremony. • Collection by Zhongnanhai: His works were collected by the Purple Light Pavilion (Ziguangge) in 2006. • Philanthropic Contributions: He has donated paintings for disaster relief on many occasions and promoted the art of Qi Baishi. Hailed by the art circle as "learning from Qi but not imitating Qi", Zhang Shipeng abides by Qi Baishi's teaching that "those who learn from me live, those who copy me perish". Following his mentor Xu Linlu's maxim of "entering through the gate and breaking out of it", he has developed a distinctive personal style. His works, combining solid traditional foundation with modern aesthetic taste, are praised as a classic example of art embodying "peace and harmony, and the unity of man and nature".
